TENS / NMES therapy

TENS stands for Trans-cutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, and it is mainly used for pain relief. It causes a stimulation of nerves which help to reduce pain stimuli.

NMES stands for Neuro-Muscular Electrical Stimulation, and it is mainly used to elicit a muscle contraction. It is indicated to preserve or recover muscle mass, especially if there is loss of fast-twitch muscle fibres, for instance after injury-related or disuse atrophy (muscle wasting).

Both TENS and NMES are usually administered by using the same machine, with different settings. Small rubber or sticky electrodes are placed in strategic places, before the machine is switched on to elicit the desired effect. It is painless, quick and efficient and will not require any form of sedation or anaesthetic. In some cases, owners can do this treatment themselves, after good instructions.
