After qualifying as a veterinary surgeon, she subsequently started working in a busy small animal practice in Lithuania. She also did some wildlife work, whilst there. After a couple of years she decided to move to the UK. Initially she worked in multiple large multi-branch veterinary practices in Kent, but after a while she decided to move to the Surrey countryside. Rimante has done an Internship at the world-renowned Fitzpatrick Referrals, Oncology and Soft Tissue Surgery Hospital in Surrey, and has worked at a high-quality primary care vet practice in Surrey. The overall aim of rehabilitation is to decrease pain, to facilitate tissue healing, to restore muscle strength, endurance and proprioception, to prevent further injury, and to return a patient to its former level of activity and fitness. Rehabilitation is often used as part of the aftercare for orthopaedic and neurological surgery cases, but can also be for treatment and management of injuries, both of bony or soft tissue origin. Furthermore, we sometimes use rehabilitation techniques for fitness and strength development in canine athletes, especially for sporting dogs such as agility and field trial dogs, among many others. Rehabilitation Consultations include an initial evaluation which tends to be between 60-90 minutes in duration. This will consist of a full physical orthopaedic and neurological examination, including the assessment of stance and gait, the measurement of joint angles and muscle mass, weight and body condition, and, in some cases, specific tests developed to assess particular conditions. After a full assessment, a specific programme is designed for individual patients, rather than producing a ‘cook book’ programme for a particular condition, as all patients differ in their individual factors. A treatment programme is designed, taking into consideration goals set for progression for that patient. This will then be reviewed at regular intervals and adapted where necessary to ensure that the goals are being met. Treatment will vary. This can consist of manual techniques, therapeutic modalities and a home exercise programme. We can also use acupuncture, medical management and hydrotherapy, and we may give dietary and nutritional advice. Different modalities may be used during different stages of the recovery process, which will be based on the individual patient’s condition, progress and aims. Manual therapies may include massage techniques, joint mobilisations, passive range of motion exercises, trigger point release as an example. Therapeutic modalities may include LASER treatment, TENS/NMES treatment, heat therapy, cryotherapy, Therapeutic Ultrasound treatment and Hydrotherapy. A Home Exercise Programme is beneficial for patients receiving rehabilitation treatment and will be designed to complement treatment plans. During the treatment the laser’s hand piece is passed over the area which needs treatment and the deep penetrating light increases the circulation and brings in oxygen and nutrients creating the best environment for the damaged cells to heal. The response to the treatment can sometimes be seen as soon as 12 hrs after the treatment but the effect is cumulative and most conditions require several treatments for the greatest benefit. Most cases require up to 6 treatments, often delivered over 3-6 weeks. It can be used in conjunction with other treatments, like medication, acupuncture, physiotherapy or hydrotherapy. It’s called the ‘K-Laser Cube Performance 30’ and it is the most advanced and the most modern and powerful therapeutic laser available to vets nowadays! Beware that, elsewhere, ‘laser’ treatments are also sometimes offered, but these are rarely of the same calibre as the ones the K-Laser CP30 can provide! Most of these machines are less powerful, less versatile and less quick and they have fewer clinical indications than the K-Laser CP30. Other forms of light therapy are also on offer, often with even less penetration, power and effect. This laser treatment is a great new treatment for various conditions because the high intensity light particles directly stimulate the cells in the body’s tissues to heal themselves, and by doing this it reduces healing time and pain.
